Something Better is a short story told in the tradition of the best cautionary fiction — specific, honest, and without a comfortable ending. Fifteen-year-old Ditra gives birth to her first son in a hospital room where the baby's father doesn't show and her own mother offers cruelty instead of comfort. Through flashbacks and forward motion across years, the story traces how Ditra — a valedictorian, National Merit Scholar, and 4.0 student who had every credential for a different life — allowed a controlling, unfaithful older man to pull her into two pregnancies, a shelter bed, and years of rebuilding from nothing. The story does not excuse her choices or his, but it names exactly how a young woman with every reason to succeed can still end up choosing survival over wisdom before she is old enough to know the difference. It ends where it earns the right to: with both of Ditra's sons grown, educated, and steady, and with her understanding that the way out of a bad inheritance is not luck but the daily, non-negotiable decision to be something different.
